One of my few gripes with Mac OSX is TextEdit. It works, but sometimes you just want to view text files as text files; copying and pasting into the editor, no formatting. I wanted a tool as close to Notepad++ as possible (or Programmer's File Editor, from way back in Win95). If you are looking for alternative editors, here are some (actually, just 2) suggestions:
- Smultron - open source editor. Syntax highlighting with HTML previews.
- TextWrangler - closed source, but free. Syntax highlighting.
Smultron is quite popular, so I put that in there for reference. Any of the two is more than enough as a substitute for the default TextEdit, but Smultron has quite a lot of bugs in Snow Leopard, so I use TextWrangler most of the time.
